The GAFIS Graduate Student Symposium, now in its 25th year, provides a forum for intellectual and scholarly exchange in a positive collegial atmosphere. Interdisciplinary in nature, this national event gives future colleagues the chance to meet each other and to hear about current issues in upcoming research. Excellence and pertinence are assured through an anonymous and peer juried selection process.
This year's symposium, Milestones, will be held at the University of Madison-Wisconsin, on Friday March 23 and Saturday March 24, 2012.
This symposium aims to examine the importance of so-called “lieux de mémoire” – people, objects, places and events that trigger or focus cultural memory – and the role they play in the ongoing interchange between art and its cultural context. What is it about a particular moment, text, place, object, that makes it a milestone? How do we mark these milestones, and how are we marked by them?
